Cookies – what are they and how are they used?

Cookies are small files of letters and numbers which we send to your computer or smart phone when you access our website.

The use of cookies means that our website can recognise you and distinguish you from other users, which can help with things like logging in or any preferences you have saved.

Cookies that we use

This website sets no cookies of its own. Your choice is kept in your browser’s local storage rather than in a cookie, so we can remember it without setting one.

Counting visits, with no cookie

Two things run for every visitor and set nothing in your browser. Google Analytics sends a count of the page you are on, with no cookie and no identifier, until you turn Analytics cookies on. Cloudflare Web Analytics sends the same kind of count, with the page, where you came from and your country, and never sets a cookie. Neither can tell one visit of yours from another.

Analytics cookies, off until you turn them on

• Google Analytics sets _ga and _ga_0WQ8D52YG1. They count visits and tell us which pages are read.
• Microsoft Clarity sets _clck and _clsk. They tell us how a page is used, such as where people scroll and click. Microsoft may also set cookies on its own clarity.ms and bing.com domains.

Marketing cookies, off until you turn them on

• LinkedIn’s Insight Tag sets li_fat_id here and its own cookies on linkedin.com. It tells us how many visits came from our posts and adverts on LinkedIn, and when someone who came that way tries the product or books a call.
• HubSpot sets __hstc, __hssc, __hssrc and hubspotutk. They tell us which pages a person we are already talking to has read.

Turning a category off deletes the cookies it set on this site. LinkedIn’s own cookies are cleared from your LinkedIn settings, not from here. Turning Marketing off leaves one HubSpot cookie, __hs_do_not_track, which holds no identifier and tells HubSpot not to track you; turning Marketing back on removes it.

Nothing on this website is behind a cookie: every page reads the same either way.

Content from other sites

Some pages carry a video or a podcast player from YouTube or Spotify. Nothing is loaded from either until you press the player’s button: until then the page shows a picture held on this website and a link to the video or episode. Once you press it, the player is served by YouTube (from youtube-nocookie.com) or by Spotify, and it can set its own cookies. We also link to other sites, such as LinkedIn and Trustpilot, and each of those sets its own cookies once you are on it.
